Oudtshoorn | Swartberg
The climbing at Oudtshoorn is steep limestone. Oudtshoorn is the only developed limestone sport climbing in Southern Africa, at this stage. There are 127 sport lines & 1 naturally protected route. 11 of the sport lines are still projects.
The climbing is at de Hoek, close to Cango Caves. Oudtshoorn offers all year round climbing. Winter will be cold especially at night. In summer it will be very hot, but you can start early, rest in the middle of the day & climb till late afternoon. Short Circuit Sector gets shade early in the morning & Main Wall gets shade in the afternoon. Main Wall fairs well in poor weather & rain.
De Hoek Mountain Resort has great camping, bungalows & chalets at reasonable prices. Telephone 044-272 8214 for reservations. Check out: www.dehoekmountainresort.co.za or email info@dehoekmountainresort.co.za.
Note: reservations are fond of saying the resort is fully booked when it is in fact empty, so just pitching up at the gate is a good option especially if you are camping.
There are plenty of B&Bs, hotels & other accommodation in the Oudtshoorn area. Take your pick.
Access
De Hoek is municipal land. The climbing is completely open to guests of De Hoek Mountain Resort. There may be a day fee for climbers not staying at De Hoek.
